Building Traditional Window Casing For New Windows
In our garage makeover project we had to replace 3 windows. We wanted to re-create the window trim so it would look like the original, or at least look like the other old garages and houses in the neighborhood.

Casement Window
Believe it or not, traditional casement windows with opening lights, or sashes, can be made in the small workshop with just the basic hand-held power tools and some basic joints. Add some transoms, mullions and glazing bars and you can make frames of any size with any combination of lights. Material dimensions and design features, such as mouldings, vary to match adjacent windows. On larger frames, member sizes may be beefed up a bit. Larger sashes often have a wider bottom rail, usually 70mm, for greater stability.

Making Interior Shutters
My wife.... finally asked me to do it enough times that I went through old magazines looking for articles on building shutters. I found two: issue #59 (June ?97) of American Woodworker and issue #53 of Fine Woodworking. Of the two, the American Woodworker article was the most helpful and outlines the basic process I followed. It turns out it wasn?t as challenging or tedious as I?d thought and my wife and I are both happy with the results.

Shutters on the French Quarter

Temporary Window Support
Before you install a window, determine if the wall into which it?s being installed is a load-bearing wall. If it is, you?ll have to build a temporary structure--a header and two side posts--to support all the ceiling joists that will be affected during the framing process. Once the support has been set in place, you can begin framing the rough opening for the new window
